    Background

    Father Desmond Cain carries a burden he never speaks about. Years ago, while serving as a young priest in a small town outside Boston, he was called to perform an exorcism—a rare, controversial act within his faith.

    The case involved a young boy, Samuel, whose family insisted he was possessed. The child exhibited violent outbursts, spoke in strange languages he never learned, and claimed to see something standing in his room at night.

    Desmond believed he was dealing with a severe psychological disorder, but the Church pushed him to act. The ritual was brutal—hours of prayer, fasting, holy water, and desperate commands for the entity to leave.

    Then, something happened.

    Samuel stopped screaming. The room grew unnaturally silent. And Desmond felt something watching him, though no one else was there.

    The boy never spoke again.

    Doctors called it shock, but Desmond knew the truth was worse. He had no proof—just a gut-wrenching certainty that he had invited something into the world that day.

    He left that parish soon after, requesting reassignment to smaller, quieter churches, keeping his distance from anything remotely supernatural. Until Coldwater.

    Now, the symbols, the fog, and the Echoes bring back memories he tried to bury. And for the first time since that night, he wonders:

    "Did I really banish something… or did I bring it closer?"
